What JotNotes collects, and why
Last updated 15 September 2026. JotNotes (Steven Higashi, trading as JotNotes) runs this website, the licence shop and the licence service. This page covers those. It does not cover a hosting company’s own JDrive service: that company decides what happens to its customers’ files, and JotNotes has no access to them.
This website
No analytics, no advertising and no tracking cookies. Like every web server, ours records the address, time and page of each request; those logs are deleted after 14 days.
When you buy or ask for a free licence
- We keep your company name, billing email, the band, the licence keys issued to you, and the PayPal subscription and customer references.
- Card and bank details go to PayPal, never to us.
- The checkout page sets one cookie that protects the form. It expires after 30 minutes.
- We use this to issue and renew your keys, send your licence, renewal and payment emails, and keep business records.
When you ask for a demo
We keep the email address and company you give, which demo you asked for, when, and the internet address the request came from. We use it to send the one-time demo link, to know who tried the demo, and to email you about JDrive in the six months after. We keep it for two years, or delete it sooner if you ask. The demo account itself is deleted after an hour.
Usage reports from your servers
Once a day a JDrive for Hosting server sends: its version, a random server ID, a fingerprint of its licence key, how many accounts it has, how much is stored, and how much was transferred in 30 days. We also see the internet address it reports from. It never sends names, email addresses or files. We use it to show your servers together in the console, to renew free licences, and to tell you when you pass your band. You can switch it off; see Installing and upgrading.
Who else handles it
- PayPal, for payments.
- Brevo, to send email.
- Vultr, whose server in Toronto, Canada runs this website, the shop and the demo.
- Backblaze, which stores a daily backup copy of the shop’s records.
We do not sell or share your information for marketing.
How long we keep it
Orders, keys and invoices are kept for six years for tax records. For usage reports we keep the latest report from each server and one reading a day, for as long as your licence exists; email us to have them deleted.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete what we hold about you, subject to the records we must keep by law. Email jot@jotnotes.com. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
